Call for research proposals

Inquire UK - the Institute for Quantitative Investment Research - aims to bridge the gap between academics and practitioners with interests in the investment management area.

As part of this process we are able to offer research grants for research projects likely to yield results of interest to investment industry professionals. The maximum level of funding will normally be £10,000. However, in exceptional cases the Committee will be prepared to consider making awards in excess of this amount for larger programmes of research. Possible research areas include:

  • Characteristics of assets. Equities, bonds, cash, currencies, commodities, property.
  • Investment processes. Strategic asset allocation, tactical asset allocation, stock selection, yield curve analysis, style management, passive management.
  • Investment techniques. Trading rules, program trading, arbitrage, seasonal effects, technical models.
  • Risk and return models. CAPM, APT, multi-factor models, alternative return models, alternative risk models.
  • Analytical methods. Neural networks, times series analysis, chaos theory, non-linear systems, genetic algorithms, complexity, factory analysis, principal components, numerical methods and optimization.
  • Investment performance. Attribution analysis, benchmarks, accounting issues, statistical evidence, transaction costs.
  • Management issues. Company management, manager selection, fees.
  • Derivatives. Forwards, futures, swaps, options, "exotics".
  • Alternative investment strategies.

Research proposals should be concise and generally should not exceed 6 A4 pages. They should cover the following:

  • Research objectives
  • Previous research in the area
  • Research design and methods
  • Resources required
  • Time scale
  • Deliverable outputs
  • Budget
  • Summary of previous funded research projects
  • Brief CVs of researchers

Each proposal should include a concise executive summary. Although any incremental costs will be considered for support please note that Inquire does not normally pay general institutional overhead loadings, or for computer hardware/software or conference travel. It is possible for Inquire to arrange for research support in the form of personal research grants whereby individual researchers are responsible for accounting for project finances. Please indicate whether your proposal has been accepted or is being considered for funding by any other body, providing details. Note that Inquire is interested in considering proposals for co-funding research with other funding agencies, for example as an “industrial partner” in research funded by one of the UK research councils.
